The story of my trip around the world to train, teach and compete in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and other grappling arts.

NYC to L.A. roadtrip… anyone? :)

I am starting to plan the US part of my trip, and my biggest problem with this is, that I have so many invitations to so many interesting places, that I have no idea where to go and where to not go.

My plan so far is to go from Hawaii to Oregon in beginning of may and from there fly to New York on May 5-6 to meet my girlfriend for six days. After that, I will head west and hopefully end up in Los Angeles for the Worlds in the beginning of June. So basically, I have a month to get from New York to L.A. while visiting as many interesting BJJ gyms as possible along the way.

Anyone up for a little roadtrip? :D

That’s not very much time. Really, you’re talking at best leaving NYC on May 12 or 13, and wanting to get to Cali by June 2-3 I would think… to have time to acclimate and settle in and train with all the big dogs in Cali…

    That’s just 3 weeks.

I’d do Marcelo Garcia in NYC… Royler Gracie and David Adiv in New Jersey… Jay Valko in Chicago… for sure the Alliance mothership in Atlanta… come here to Austin Texas for Marcio Feitosa and my instructors Donald Park (Royler) and Phil Cardella (Relson) and because it’s on the way from Georgia to California… don’t forget Draculinho in Houston…

God in California the mind boggles how many people you’d wanna train with! Let me know if you have troubles finding hookups there… I can get you in in southern Cal, San Fran…. etc..

Oh oh and Rafael Lovato Jr (Oklahoma, on the way from Chicago down to Texas, you could do Georgia after, or skip the mothership in Atlanta and hit Cobrinha up in California..) and Bruno Bastos in Dallas is another must-see..

Using Georgette’s itinerary, I’d skip Chicago or move it to until after Worlds.

If you go NYC/Jersey down the eastern seaboard to Atlanta, then over to Texas/Oklahoma quickly, you can spend several weeks in California hopping to any number of good gyms and really do well at the Worlds.

chicago does have a lot to offer as far as high quality instructors (comprido, valko, carlson jr… and many more) but it seems like you need to pick a northern route across or a southern route.

If my wife were not due to give birth to our son in the next 2 wks, I’d be all over a cross country training trip. I’m in NY. Marcelo Garcia’s gym is a good place to check out, of course any Gracie gym is always good, I also would suggest Clockwork Jiu-Jitsu in NYC…headed by black belt Josh Griffiths… quality jj. Good luck with the rest of your trip. I hope you enjoy your time in NY. Looking forward to reading and following along with the rest of your trip.
